SteelEye Launches Industry First Solution for Microsoft Exchange Servers

SteelEye LifeKeeper to provide integrated data replication, application failover and disaster recovery protection for Microsoft Exchange Servers in a single, scalable, solution

Los Angeles, CA - Microsoft Exchange Conference, Booth #381 - October 7, 2002 - SteelEye Technology® Inc., a leading provider of cost-effective enterprise IT reliability solutions for business continuity, today announced the general availability of its new SteelEye LifeKeeper® for Microsoft® Exchange Server solution.

SteelEye LifeKeeper for Exchange is the industry's first solution to incorporate data replication, application failover and disaster recovery protection for Microsoft Exchange Server in a single, scalable, easy to implement, and cost effective solution.

"Enterprise customers are rapidly adopting Exchange to perform business critical activities as well as routine messaging tasks," said Paul Adams, president and CEO at SteelEye. "As a result, Exchange has become integral to business critical processes, and it is imperative that organizations maintain its availability at the highest possible levels - in many cases 24 hours, 7 days a week. LifeKeeper for Exchange is the only solution to provide the combination of industry-proven, data replication, failover and disaster recovery capabilities designed specifically around Exchange Server, that can be implemented selectively, or in an integrated scalable fashion. In this way, SteelEye LifeKeeper for Exchange is truly a solution that can meet both the high availability and budgetary objectives of organizations large and small."

About SteelEye LifeKeeper for Exchange

SteelEye LifeKeeper for Exchange is a modular, scalable solution for data replication, application failover and disaster recovery that enables IT managers to implement a choice of capabilities, based upon their high availability requirements, systems environment considerations, and budgetary objectives.

SteelEye LifeKeeper for Exchange is easy to install, non-intrusive during operation, and does not require application modification, thus eliminating the potential for application destabilization caused by changes in configuration settings. SteelEye LifeKeeper for Exchange supports all versions of Windows NT and Windows 2000, from Professional to Advanced and Data Center Server editions, although does not require the implementation of Microsoft Exchange Server Enterprise Edition.

IT Managers can chose to implement SteelEye LifeKeeper for Exchange in a local data replication or local clustered configuration, to provide seamless recovery from faults within the local area network, or in a combined data replication and clustered configuration over a wide area network, to support disaster recovery.

Data Replication

For many organizations, Exchange availability and recovery requirements can be achieved through data replication, either locally or remotely to a backup site. SteelEye LifeKeeper for Exchange provides the ability to automatically replicate and back-up Exchange data "disk-to-disk". This approach saves time during recovery by making available the most current Exchange data on "hot disk" rather than relying upon back-up data stored on tape, which takes considerably more time and resources to access.

SteelEye LifeKeeper for Exchange enables data replication to be performed synchronously or asynchronously, as well as in real-time or periodically.

Application Failover

For many organizations, the business critical nature of Exchange demands the highest levels of availability, which for Intel-based systems requires servers to be clustered.

SteelEye LifeKeeper for Exchange enables greater than two-node clustering which in turn enables a broad range of multi-node cluster configuration and failover options, including cascading, one-to-many, and many-to-one failover. With SteelEye LifeKeeper for Exchange servers can also be configured in an active/passive or active/active configuration, thus enabling enhanced utilization of IT resources.

In the event of failure or failback, SteelEye LifeKeeper for Exchange provides the option to automatically attempt recovery of the failed server. If recovery is unsuccessful, SteelEye LifeKeeper for Exchange then engages in the automatic process of failover to another server in the cluster. SteelEye LifeKeeper for Exchange automatically recovers client connectivity and restores core services within seconds. Business critical operations continue without interruption, thereby eliminating loss of communications and potentially revenue generating transactions.

SteelEye LifeKeeper for Exchange provides health monitoring, failover, and if desired, failback of six key Exchange Server components: World Wide Web Publishing Service, SMTP Service, Message Transfer Agent (MTA), System Attendant, Information Store and Routing Engine. In addition to these core services, SteelEye LifeKeeper for Exchange provides optional protection for additional services, including Exchange Connectivity Controller, Connector for Lotus cc:Mail, Connector for Lotus Notes, Router for Novell GroupWise, Connector for Novell GroupWise and Microsoft Exchange Chat.

SteelEye LifeKeeper for Exchange is operational "out-of-the-box". In addition, a Software Development Kit (SDK) is available to enable organizations to build their own customized recovery kits to support enhanced Exchange high availability.

Disaster Recovery

The combination of SteelEye LifeKeeper for Exchange's data replication and wide area failover capabilities provide the optimal combination of facilities to support the recovery and high availability of Exchange at the time of a disaster. The integrated nature of these capabilities, combined with their optimization for the Exchange environment, ensures that application failover and replication of data is timely, accurate, assured, and with minimal impact upon users.

Application Maintenance

SteelEye LifeKeeper for Exchange can be used to alleviate the time and resource constraints associated with conducting routine Exchange maintenance. SteelEye LifeKeeper for Exchange can be used to manually failover a production Exchange system to a secondary/stand-by server or cluster, and to failback Exchange to the primary server or cluster when maintenance has been completed - thus assuring high availability and continuous operations.

Pricing and Availability

SteelEye LifeKeeper for Exchange and its components are immediately available. Pricing for data replication starts at $1,400 per server, pricing for local area failover starts at $4,500 per server, and pricing for wide area disaster recovery capabilities starts at $9,500 per server.
