If data is the lifeblood then high availability is the nerve center that is on call 24/7/365 to assure your applications are running and consistently available to users. No matter how fault tolerant your servers and storage subsystems may be, if you only have a single copy of the most current data, you are at risk of data loss. Catastrophic failures of your storage subsystem due to hardware failure or natural disasters can be a cause of data loss. However, corruption due to hardware malfunction or user error is a much more likely occurrence.
What is High Availability?
High Availability is the process used to mitigate problems caused by the loss of data by sharing information so as to ensure consistency between redundant resources to improve reliability and accessibility. In most cases companies will use various means to make copies of data at different times to have a redundant or backup copy available if needed. Then, when the primary data resource is unavailable for any reason, the backup copy can be used to restore the primary data resource to that point in time when the data was backed up. The decision that IT organizations need to make is whether the last point-in-time backup of the information is good enough to meet the organizations operational requirements for business continuity.
